Could you introduce yourself?
Hi, I'm Alex! I was born in Toronto, Canada but grew up in Australia. As a child I moved a lot, mostly living in cities along Australia's east coast or inland areas, where I always rode horses on my parents` farm. I wish I could live in Baji Park !! I came to Japan in 1999. My plan was to stay for 6 months but the people I met here were so awesome I couldn't leave. Now I feel most at home in Tokyo. |

What kind of Japanese food do you like? what do you like the most about Japan?
I love ``friendly`` food like Shabu Shabu, Suki Yaki, Nabe, Yaki Niku or Okonom yaki because everybody eats, shares and talks together. It's so sociable. I had had sushi before I came to Japan, but its definitely more delicious here! Basically I crave anything with wasabi !
There are so many good things about Japan like technology, entertainment, history and culture. I really love the hotsprings because we don't have them in Australia. My favourites are near Nikko and on Hachijo Island. I like outdoor hotsprings the most. |

Could you tell us about what you do in your free time?
I go to parks a lot, I like picnicking in summer or going to the beach. Sometimes I take day trips to other cities and explore. . .and I take language lessons, like you !
Recently I bought a great book called ``Tokyo for Free`` and it has lots of cool cheap or free things to do in and around Tokyo, so I've been able to find a bunch of new things to see. I used to love pottery so I'd like to start learning Japanese pottery in the New Year.
Tokyo is such a vibrant city so there is always something do or see. |

Do you have any messages to us?
I hope you have fun learning English. Try to speak a little everyday (even if you talk to yourself in the car or the shower). I think keeping tape diaries really helps ! For beginner students, join your public library and borrow some childrens' books in English, it's good practice. Now I'm reading childrens' books in Japanese and it gives me confidence to keep trying.. For intermediate to advanced students, there are some good Japanese/English newspapers and publications that might be interesting to you. If you have time take a look at ``The Hiragana Times`` (It translates articles from English to Japanese). Both Japanese and English students find it useful, or ``The Asahi Evening News`` also with Japanese and English.
